The cost of living in Bozeman for the third quarter of 2009 was 5.7 percent higher than the national average, Prospera Business Network announced Wednesday.

The figure was generated by the ACCRA Cost of Living Index, which compares the cost of consumer goods in more than 300 cities across the country. Prospera provides the prices of goods and services for Bozeman.

Prospera's figures show that in the second quarter of the year, Bozeman's cost of living was only 3.3 percent above the national average.

Greg Mortenson, the Bozeman man who raises pennies from American schoolchildren to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, was named Friday by U.S. News & World Report magazine as one of “America’s best leaders” for 2009.

The magazine included Mortenson in a list of more than 20 leaders, ranging from Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke to the late Sen. If Bozeman residents were at one time hoping for their 15 minutes of fame and then falling back into obscurity, they will once again be disappointed.  Recently, our area was featured and congratulated as a fine place to live in the October 2009 editions of both Entrepreneur Magazine and National Geographic Adventure magazine.
