What the Roadless Rule Repeal Could Mean for Big Sky, Montana
If you live in Big Sky, or dream of it, the forest is part of the address. The ridgelines you see from the Meadow, the trails out of the Mountain Village and the headwaters that feed the Gallatin all sit within or beside national forest land. A good share of that land is protected by a federal policy most people have never had a reason to think about: the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule.
That may be changing. On August 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed rescinding the Roadless Rule nationwide. Here in Montana, about 6.4 million acres of national forest fall under it.
