Helena, Mont., 4,058 feet above sea level near the Continental Divide, weathered much of the real estate storm.
Its status as the state capital and the Lewis and Clark County seat afforded some shelter.
"That brings a lot of stability in our market," says Joe Mueller, president of the Helena Association of Realtors.
The Helena metro area also was protected from a recent boom in home foreclosures because few purchases were financed with subprime and variable-rate mortgages.
