Check out these weekend events taking place in Southwest Montana from Friday, July 21st - Sunday, July 23rd: ARTS Once Upon a Mattress-The Ellen Theatre-Fri-Sat at 7:30 pm and Sun at 3:00 pm. Hear ye, hear ye, lords and ladies, nobles and serfs, Montana TheatreWorks announces the very first summer musical at ye olde Ellen Theatre to be Once Upon A Mattress. This hilarious retelling of The Princess and the Pea is a musical family favorite, loaded with great songs and delightful dances, all set in a madcap medieval castle complete with damsels in distress, a jovial jester, knights in shining armor, a befuddled wizard and enough belly laughs to slay a dragon. The African American community in historic Bozeman is nearly invisible until you begin to examine the historic census records, newspaper accounts, and city directories. Only then do Bozeman's black citizens come into focus. One name leads to another and soon a tight knit and thriving African American community emerges during the late 19th century. Working as machinists, laborers, laundresses, housekeepers, and porters, Bozeman's Africa American people contributed to the building of our city through their labor, religious activity, child rearing, social clubs and community participation. Ghosts of Bozeman's Past: Historic Sunset Hills Cemetery-Sunset Hills Cemetery-Sun at 4:00 pm. Set atop a peaceful overlook, Bozeman's historic Sunset Hills Cemetery offers a panoramic view of downtown while each evening's sunset reflects the nature of its quiet inhabitants. The early residents of Bozeman laid their love ones to rest in this sanctified ground overlooking the town that their toil and labor helped establish. Bozeman's early movers and shakers rest here along with others whose stories make up the town's historical narrative. Here you will find the Story family plot where Bozeman's most notorious resident, Nelson Story is laid to rest alongside his family. John Bozeman, the man for whom the town is name is interred there as well and that's an interesting story . . . SPORTING EVENTS Headwaters Bank Run-Headwaters Trail System in Three Forks-Sat at 6:30 am. 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon – Proceeds benefit the Headwaters Trail System to build more trails! The course is on the beautiful Headwaters Trail System in Three Forks. $20 Pre-registration by July 6th.  Late registration $25 after July 6th and race day. All participants receive a t-shirt. Cross Cut 25k & 15k-Bridger Bowl-Sat at 7:00 am. This event will be hosted at Bridger Bowl Ski Area and will cover some of the great trails from Bridger Bowl, Cross Cut, and Bohart Ranch! The courses will be primarily run on technical terrain and mostly single track trail.  A few maintenance roads will be crossed while running on the Bridger Bowl property.  Also, for the mid summer months be prepared for tall wet grass as well.
