About

Chet Huntley petitioned Montana’s governor in 1969 to grant his resort the name “Big Sky” which formerly was reserved to represent the entire state. Tucked between the pristine Gallatin River and the rugged Spanish Peaks, the alpine community of Big Sky is the ultimate playground for the outdoor enthusiast.

In the early 1900s, Frank Crail and his family homesteaded 960 acres which are now Meadow Village. His hay and cattle ranch evolved over time into Huntley’s vision of a two village resort community. From humble beginnings emerged a world-class ski resort complemented by the people and their businesses that give Big Sky its unique culture.

Big Sky encompasses three main geographic areas; the canyon, the meadow, and the mountain. Big Sky’s scenic Gallatin Canyon offers riverfront living, horse properties, and 20-acre ranchettes along the corridor of Highway 191. The meadow area is represented by the historic heart of Big Sky, Meadow Village, and the newly developing Town Center. The mountain neighborhoods include ski retreats at Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin along with properties that overlook these majestic ski areas.

Big Sky is a small, unincorporated town that can’t decide whether it really wants to grow up. Developed as a resort community, each neighborhood has a presiding homeowners association that takes on the role of municipal services along with specially created districts to manage water and sewer, transportation, and fire services. A 3% resort tax on luxury goods and services helps bring in additional monies for community infrastructure. This area hosts an eclectic mix of full-time residents, seasonal second homeowners, tourists, and people attracted to Big Sky’s outdoor recreation and resort economy.
