About Matt & His Work
Matthew MaCoy is a Montana-based photographer and educator living in Bozeman. Currently working part-time building a small business – Points North Productions – and part-time instructing photography at Montana State University, Matt has found a home in Southwest Montana. Growing up in Denver, Colorado Matt was raised to appreciate the nature around him but was always seeking more space to roam, Bozeman is where he found it.
His continued affection for the outdoors developed into a relentless pursuit of outdoor recreation such as skiing, fishing, biking, hunting, and backpacking. MaCoy’s undying love for nature is evident in his art, both subjectively and conceptually. The aesthetic aspect of his landscape and documentary images is paramount, but the focus on aesthetics often contains a subtext commentary on man’s interaction with nature. As an environmental photographer, MaCoy explores the dichotomy between our society and its relationship and position within the natural order. MaCoy’s primary goal is to communicate an essence of unity and connection between man and the natural world and advocate for product stewardship and harmony in this relationship.
Living in Bozeman, the surrounding splendor of Montana wilderness allows MaCoy to experience this unity firsthand and interact with nature in a positive way. Exploring a multitude of styles and aesthetics in his work, MaCoy uses medium and large format film as well as digital media to capture scenes in grandiose scale and detail, consuming the audience within the landscape. Continuing forward Matthew intends to keep traveling to discover new places, lifestyles, and cultures to photograph.
Through adventure, MaCoy seeks a balance between fine art and outdoor commercial photography. Not looking to market outdoor products but rather advertise the Great American Treasure of public land and advocate for the conservation of this invaluable resource.
Our Pledge
ERA Landmark has always approached hanging artists in our office a little differently - instead of taking a commission from art sales, we ask our artists to donate a small percentage towards a local charity or nonprofit near and dear to their hearts. Matt has pledged to donate 20% of his art proceeds from any sales to Public Land Water Access Association INC, who in turn is "dedicated to maintaining, restoring, and perpetuating public access to the boundaries of all Montana’s public lands and waters." To further help support Matt's cause, ERA Landmark will be price-matching a donation of up to $250 as well towards the same association.
