Historic Preservation Month in Gallatin Valley May 2024
Posted on May 1, 2024 by ERA LandmarkMay is National Historic Preservation Month and the Historic Preservation Advisory Board has created a month-long celebration of events!
Did you know that Gallatin Valley, where Bozeman proudly sits, holds a special name amongst Native American tribes? "Aapistsisskitsaahko," or the Valley of Flowers, reflects the breathtaking abundance of wildflowers that paint the mountainsides and valley floor. According to Blackfeet legend, this land wasn't a place of conflict, but rather a shared haven for numerous tribes including the Apsáalooke (Crow), Tsetsêhesêstâhase & So’taa’eo’o (Northern Cheyenne), Sélish (Salish), Ksanka (Kootenai), Niitsitapi (Blackfeet), Lakota & Dakota (Sioux), Nimíipuu (Nez Perce), Bannock, and Shoshoni. This rich tapestry of stories and heritage continues to shape Bozeman and the greater Gallatin Valley into the unique and vibrant place it is today. Throughout May, the Historic Preservation Advisory Board, will be hosting a series of events that are a fantastic opportunity to connect with your community, learn about the Valley of Flowers' captivating history, and appreciate the ongoing efforts to preserve Bozeman's irreplaceable heritage.
