Butte

Butte, Montana, often called "The Richest Hill on Earth," boasts a rich and colorful history deeply intertwined with mining. Located in the Northern Rocky Mountains on the Continental Divide, Butte was established in the late 1800s as a silver and gold mining camp. In the early 1900s copper became the main output of the mines of Butte. In the 1890s Butte was responsible for supplying over 25% of the world’s copper and 50% of the United States copper supply. Butte's past is evident in its impressive architecture, from grand Victorian mansions to historic mining structures. Today, visitors can delve into this history at the World Museum of Mining, explore the Berkeley Pit, a massive open-pit mine, and marvel at the Our Lady of the Rockies, a 90-foot statue overlooking the city.
