What's New at MOR? A Look at Cretaceous Crossroads and More!

If you're looking for a great way to spend a day in Bozeman, the Museum of the Rockies is always a top choice. It’s a place that manages to be both a world-class research institution and a genuinely fun destination for all ages. With a fantastic new dinosaur exhibit just opened and another exciting one on the horizon, now is the perfect time for a visit.

Let's walk through what you can see at the museum right now, starting with the main event!

The Big News: Welcome to Cretaceous Crossroads

The Siebel Dinosaur Complex has a brand-new addition, and it's a must-see. The Cretaceous Crossroads exhibit takes a fascinating approach to the end of the dinosaur era. Instead of just showing off individual fossils, this exhibit immerses you in the ecosystem of Late Cretaceous Montana, a pivotal moment in Earth's history right before the asteroid impact.

So, what makes it special?

  • It’s a Story of an Ecosystem: You’ll learn how iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops actually lived together. The exhibit explores the food web, the environment, and the complex relationships between different species that shared this landscape.
  • See the Latest Science: MOR is an active research center, and this exhibit puts some of its latest findings on display. You’re getting a look at the most up-to-date science, from how dinosaurs raised their young to the plants they ate.
  • Engaging for Everyone: Through a mix of incredible fossil displays, detailed environmental reconstructions, and interactive stations, "Cretaceous Crossroads" makes complex scientific ideas easy to grasp. It’s designed to spark curiosity whether you're a seasoned fossil enthusiast or a family with young kids.

This exhibit is a fantastic evolution of the museum's dinosaur halls, adding a rich layer of context to their already incredible collection.

The Permanent Favorites You Know and Love

While you're there for the new exhibit, don't forget about the amazing permanent installations that make MOR a local treasure.

  • Siebel Dinosaur Complex: This is the heart of the museum for many. It’s where you’ll find the famous Montana's T. rex, "Big Mike," and the truly impressive growth series of Triceratops skulls, showing how the dinosaur changed as it aged. It’s one of the most important collections of North American dinosaur fossils in the world.
  • Paugh History Hall: Take a walk through Montana's past. This hall covers the history of the Northern Rocky Mountains, from Native American life to the arrival of fur trappers, gold miners, and homesteaders. The collection of historic firearms and early automobiles is always a highlight.
  • Enduring Peoples: This exhibit offers a thoughtful and important look into the lives and cultures of the Northern Plains Indigenous peoples. Through beautiful artifacts and personal stories, it showcases the heritage and resilience of the region's first inhabitants.
  • Taylor Planetarium: Need a break from walking? The planetarium is the perfect spot. Lean back and take a trip through the cosmos with one of their rotating shows. It’s a great way to round out your visit.

Looking Forward: Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall

As if "Cretaceous Crossroads" wasn't enough, the museum has another major exhibit on the way! Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall is a traveling exhibition created in partnership with the National Geographic Society.

This exhibit will give visitors an in-depth look at the life of the legendary primatologist. You’ll get to explore a replica of her research tent from Gombe, Tanzania, learn about her groundbreaking discoveries in chimpanzee behavior through interactive displays, and understand her journey from scientist to one of the world's most recognized conservation advocates. It promises to be an inspiring and educational experience for all ages.

Keep an eye on the MOR website for official opening dates.

Whether you haven't been in years or you were just there last month, the Museum of the Rockies has something new and exciting to share. Plan your visit soon to check out Cretaceous Crossroads and see for yourself!
