The Sweet Pea Festival is committed to its mission statement of "promoting and cultivating the arts." Begin celebrating the 40th anniversary of Sweet Pea on Saturday morning with the parade in downtown Bozeman, then enjoy music, performances, food, and vendors throughout the weekend in Lindley Park. Intermountain Opera Bozeman is thrilled to welcome back bass-baritone Joseph Beutel, last seen in Bozeman as Sulpice in The Daughter of the Regiment and soprano, Tasha Fain an IOB regular most recently seen in last February's musical A Little Night Music and as Zerlina in Don Giovanni. This remarkably talented and charming couple along with other local opera favorites will perform highlights from IOB's 40th Anniversary productions. With selections from the gentle and endearing The Tender Land, the delightful romantic comedy She Loves Me, and from the fervently cunning affairs of Falstaff. Brewery Follies-H. S. Gilbert Brewery-Fri-Sun at 4:00 pm & 8:00 pm. What is The Brewery Follies? It's an absurd, wacky, zany, fun-filled, contemporary comedy revue with music in a cabaret atmosphere that contains biting parody and naughty political/social satire. SLAM Summer Festival-Bogert Park-Sat-Sun at 10:00 am. SLAM is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts and art education in the state in a manner that enriches and involves the community. SLAM hosts events to showcase the artistic talent of Montana residents, funds scholarships to community members seeking education in the arts, and spearheads community art installations. Charged-The Ellen Theatre-Bozeman-Sat at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. Directed by Bozeman local Phillip Baribeau, Charged chronicles the journey of chef and outdoorsman Eduardo Garcia, and his recovery, after being electrocuted by 2400 volts of electricity, miles from help, in the Montana backcountry. Garcia lost his hand, ribs, muscle mass, and nearly his life, but more important than what he lost is what he found. Charged tells Eduardo's remarkable story, from getting up off the forest floor to becoming the man he is today. The African American community in historic Bozeman is nearly invisible until you begin to examine the historic census records, newspaper accounts, and city directories. Only then do Bozeman's black citizens come into focus. One name leads to another and soon a tight knit and thriving African American community emerges during the late 19th century. Working as machinists, laborers, laundresses, housekeepers, and porters, Bozeman's Africa American people contributed to the building of our city through their labor, religious activity, child rearing, social clubs and community participation. The early residents of Bozeman laid their love ones to rest in this sanctified ground overlooking the town that their toil and labor helped establish. Bozeman's early movers and shakers rest here along with others whose stories make up the town's historical narrative. Here you will find the Story family plot where Bozeman's most notorious resident, Nelson Story is laid to rest alongside his family. Livingston Fish Fest-Livingston Miles Park-Fri at noon and Sat at 10:00 am. The International Fly Fishing Fair is coming to Livingston for the second year in a row with the new Fish Fest featuring live music and even more activities. Fly Fishers International has been putting on the fair for the last 53 years in cities across the country featuring workshops, river tours, and a litany of fish-related activities will now add to a two-day music and food festival to the mix. SPORTING EVENTS Gallatin Speedway Races-Gallatin Speedway, 2290 Tubb Rd, Belgrade-Fri at 7:35 pm. Gallatin Speedway was built in 1997 to replace the old Hub of the Valley Speedway which had been located near I-90 and was purchased by the State of Montana to put in a new interchange.
