RED LODGE — When the market for vacation homes cratered in 2008, Red Lodge developer Bill Kiely didn’t cuss his bad luck and walked away from a development that had a difficult history.

Instead, he came up with a “try it, you’ll like it” approach to marketing high-end condominiums in Island at Rock Creek, a development just east of downtown Red Lodge.

The rental program, which began in 2008, gave potential buyers an opportunity to try out the condos while also generating cash for the development.

“It’s been very successful,” he said. “The rental program helped us hold on during the tough times of 2008 and 2009.”
