Groundbreaking Begins on the Yellowstone Heritage Trail: A Transformative Project for Livingston & Paradise Valley

Construction is officially underway on one of Southwest Montana's most anticipated outdoor recreation projects.

A long-awaited vision for Paradise Valley is finally becoming reality.

Community leaders, local organizations, elected officials, and residents recently gathered near Emigrant to celebrate the groundbreaking of the first phase of the Yellowstone Heritage Trail—a project that will eventually create a continuous 56-mile multi-use trail connecting Livingston, Paradise Valley, and Yellowstone National Park. 

For decades, residents have dreamed of a safer way to explore the valley by foot or bicycle without relying on the busy stretches of Highway 89. With construction now underway on the first three-mile segment, that vision has officially moved from planning to progress. 

A Trail Designed to Connect Communities

The Yellowstone Heritage Trail is much more than a recreational path.

Once complete, the trail will provide a safe corridor for walking, running, biking, and wildlife viewing while connecting communities throughout Paradise Valley. The route follows portions of a historic railroad corridor that once carried visitors to Yellowstone National Park in the early 1900s before rail service eventually disappeared.

The completed trail will create new opportunities for residents to travel between communities, enjoy Montana's spectacular scenery, and experience the valley in a way that has never before been possible.

The First Phase is Underway

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on the trail's initial three-mile section near Emigrant.

Although this first phase represents only a small portion of the overall project, it demonstrates years of collaboration between local governments, nonprofit organizations, community members, and private partners who have worked together to make the trail possible. 

Future phases will continue extending the trail both north toward Livingston and south toward Yellowstone National Park as funding and construction progress.
